Blog 3-Multimedia Design for Learning

After I watched “What is Multimedia Learning? What is Multimedia?” from Dr. Ray Pastore, I realized Multimedia is not newspaper or radio. Multimedia theories are modality, redundancy, and coherence, spatial, signaling and interactivity. However, it’s hard to use all multimedia learning for visually impaired people

Pictures are better than words alone. For my past experience, I have done a great power point with redundancy principle. I created a power point with text, images, and short video. Since if the power point is only with text, the audience would feel bored, so we can add a short video to make audience’s attention. I still remembered when I was in high school, I was doing a presentation about the beauty of word. In my presentation, I said we can sometimes change a word, it would make people to think in other way. After presentation, I got people’s applause.

There is an example of a multimedia learning principle I have broken in the past. I believed everyone has done a boring power point for their first power point. When I was doing my first power point, I only putted the text on it. After, I finished my presentation, I could feel the audience were bored.

Blog 2 – Where and How Do We Learn, in General, and with Multimedia?

The dual coding theory is a cognitive theory, proposed by Allan Paivio of the University of Western Ontario in 1971. In developing this theory, Paivio used the idea that the formation of mental images facilitates learning. (Thomas, 2020) For making power point, we could add some media, such as pictures or videos to help audience to understand the meaning.

Hypothes.is has useful benefits. For example, I have seen some students are using iPad during the in-class lecture that makes me to get an iPad. However, Hypothes.is can solve this problem. I can not only make notes on pdf, I can also make notes on the web, and share comments to other classmates or instructor. When I have questions, I can highlight the questions and ask the instructor. It makes students to skip sending e-mail part. It is convenient and the instructor will easily clarify the question and answer the question.

I believe multimedia learning is a great way to learn. In Eastern teaching style, the students receive what instructor says, thus you will not be able to see students discuss in class or communicate with each other in our class. And the instructor will less use multimedia for teaching. It makes lecture boring.

Blog 1-What is Multimedia and Interactive Learning, and Why is it Important?

Interactive learning is a technique that usually attempts to make students actively participate in the learning process by using technology. This is in contrast to more passive techniques such as traditional lectures.

Multimedia learning is related to the situation where people learn from words and pictures. Text includes materials provided in oral form, including printed text and oral text. Pictures refer to the form of pictures, including static pictures, such as graphics, charts, and photos, and dynamic pictures, such as movies, or videos.

I had a great experience with interactive and multimedia learning in Horror Video Games – AHVS 311F. This course was playing games. Every students was paying attention during the class. The instructor gave us a list which are all horror video games. Since our mission was playing game, and share the experience to classmates. The instructor used the video games to teach us, and ask student did we recommend this game to other people, and we will share our thought to everyone.

I would like to share an example of an interactive or learning experience that did not involve digital technology. I would say Econ245. Although this course used traditional lecture, but I really like it. I know if the instructor want to use multimedia teaching style, it would cost extra time to prepare. This instructor had outgoing personality so she makes me to study hard for the course. If the instructor does not using old school teaching style, the only thing they can do is being nice to student.

To sum up, active learning (Multimedia and Interactive Learning) makes student impossible to sleep during a class.
