Blog 9 – Active vs Passive Learning using Multimedia Tools

  • This Bad News is created like the Twine we have learned before. This is like H5P media. The Bad news used Signaling Principle ,Redundancy Principle and Multimedia Principle. It used story mode to make audience want to know what happen will be next. I would put some sound into this meedia for improving.

Sketchnoting has used redundancy principle, multimedia principle, and image principle. I have heard when some students make sketchnoting, they would review easily because image would help them to remember the information from the lecture or story.

Sketchnoting would definitely help in our school work or in life. However, you need to have grat drawing skills. If we draw like ghost, we cannot define image that you draw, it would be unuseful.

In EDCI 337, we use active learning, because after we watch the video or read lecture, we need to reflect on the lecture and weite down our own thought, and share to everyone.

Blog 8 – Persuasive Presentations or Death by PowerPoint

I chose “How to speak so that people want to listen” by Julian Treasure because this topic is related to our purpose. This gentleman cuts right through the chase, I usually dislike long introductions to the real subject. This video is teaching us that how to catch audience’s attention.

In his presentation, he has used Dual Coding theory, multimedia principle, and Signaling principle. He used clearly signaling for each word with pictures to introduce the seven deadly sins of speaking.

•Gossip

•Judging

•Negativity

•Complaining

•Excuses

•Exaggeration

•Dogmatism

Also, when he introduced those word, he used bold text to make word to make audience impressive.

For Cognitive Load Theory, we need to use for our life. Meanwhile research suggests that practice really does make perfect in that repeated repetition changes the structure of the brain. For example, when we learn new vocabulary, we need to use it in our life. Otherwise, we will forget it. •Dual Coding theory: For this theory, the memory would help more. A scene will make people to remember. Julian used his experience to tell story that makes people to remember. From my own experience, I have learned a word “significant” with unforgettable memory. This happened when my friend were discussing how to pronounce this word with me. I always remember this word because I would think about the scene I

Blog 7 – The Importance of Storytelling

https://twinery.org/2/#!/stories/75a6a7c5-feea-4b82-a6e6-497e2987bedf/play

For my Twine story, I used Redundancy Principle andPersonalization Principle. As the Redundancy Principle, I have used my own experience to show the story. In 2014, I struggled about study abroad. Since If I study abroad, I need to give up my friends in my home country because they all have their new school and new friends. However, I chose to have better world view, so I chose to coming Canada. At the beginning, I truly to feel lonely, but after that I started to have new friends. As Personalization Principle, I have used kind of multiple choice questions, when audience choose the option, they can see the different story.

Using a Twine story for educational, I would suggest the math course. When students choose the correct answer, they can continue to play for the next level. When students get the answer wrong, they need to restart again.

Blog 5 – How do we evaluate multimedia?

https://earth.google.com/earth/rpc/cc/drive?state=%7B%22ids%22%3A%5B%221J9J0GSN4cb_QoWi8eKhCZtR_tnPWbphn%22%5D%2C%22action%22%3A%22open%22%2C%22userId%22%3A%22104379595260643648022%22%2C%22resourceKeys%22%3A%7B%7D%7D&usp=sharing

From this Google Earth part, I do feel it is helpful software. For example, during the COVID-19, some people are selling their house. However, it is dangerous that buyers check the house. However, we can use similar software to see the view of inside. Thus, the buyers do not need to take the risk to visit house, buyers could just take a look online.

  • Last week, I created a H5P video about cash back credit card in Canada. Related to SECTIONS model, I believe the cost is the strength of my video because it is all free, I do not need to spend extra money on it. The weakness of this part, I would say the ‘s’ which mean the security. Since I need to share to instructor and students , so i need to set up to public.
  • I chose SECTIONS model because it is easy to understand.
  • Relate to my H5P video, I used  Voice Principle and Image Principle. Since this video has voice and image, it can attract audience’s attention.

Blog 3-Multimedia Design for Learning

After I watched “What is Multimedia Learning? What is Multimedia?” from Dr. Ray Pastore, I realized Multimedia is not newspaper or radio. Multimedia theories are modality, redundancy, and coherence, spatial, signaling and interactivity. However, it’s hard to use all multimedia learning for visually impaired people

Pictures are better than words alone. For my past experience, I have done a great power point with redundancy principle. I created a power point with text, images, and short video. Since if the power point is only with text, the audience would feel bored, so we can add a short video to make audience’s attention. I still remembered when I was in high school, I was doing a presentation about the beauty of word. In my presentation, I said we can sometimes change a word, it would make people to think in other way. After presentation, I got people’s applause.

There is an example of a multimedia learning principle I have broken in the past. I believed everyone has done a boring power point for their first power point. When I was doing my first power point, I only putted the text on it. After, I finished my presentation, I could feel the audience were bored.

Blog 2 – Where and How Do We Learn, in General, and with Multimedia?

The dual coding theory is a cognitive theory, proposed by Allan Paivio of the University of Western Ontario in 1971. In developing this theory, Paivio used the idea that the formation of mental images facilitates learning. (Thomas, 2020) For making power point, we could add some media, such as pictures or videos to help audience to understand the meaning.

Hypothes.is has useful benefits. For example, I have seen some students are using iPad during the in-class lecture that makes me to get an iPad. However, Hypothes.is can solve this problem. I can not only make notes on pdf, I can also make notes on the web, and share comments to other classmates or instructor. When I have questions, I can highlight the questions and ask the instructor. It makes students to skip sending e-mail part. It is convenient and the instructor will easily clarify the question and answer the question.

I believe multimedia learning is a great way to learn. In Eastern teaching style, the students receive what instructor says, thus you will not be able to see students discuss in class or communicate with each other in our class. And the instructor will less use multimedia for teaching. It makes lecture boring.

Blog 1-What is Multimedia and Interactive Learning, and Why is it Important?

Interactive learning is a technique that usually attempts to make students actively participate in the learning process by using technology. This is in contrast to more passive techniques such as traditional lectures.

Multimedia learning is related to the situation where people learn from words and pictures. Text includes materials provided in oral form, including printed text and oral text. Pictures refer to the form of pictures, including static pictures, such as graphics, charts, and photos, and dynamic pictures, such as movies, or videos.

I had a great experience with interactive and multimedia learning in Horror Video Games – AHVS 311F. This course was playing games. Every students was paying attention during the class. The instructor gave us a list which are all horror video games. Since our mission was playing game, and share the experience to classmates. The instructor used the video games to teach us, and ask student did we recommend this game to other people, and we will share our thought to everyone.

I would like to share an example of an interactive or learning experience that did not involve digital technology. I would say Econ245. Although this course used traditional lecture, but I really like it. I know if the instructor want to use multimedia teaching style, it would cost extra time to prepare. This instructor had outgoing personality so she makes me to study hard for the course. If the instructor does not using old school teaching style, the only thing they can do is being nice to student.

To sum up, active learning (Multimedia and Interactive Learning) makes student impossible to sleep during a class.
